Hyrox After Hiatus: My Story About Training For a Hyrox Competition After Donating My Kidney

Life is all about challenges, and sometimes, you need that one big goal to help you push through the toughest times. For me, after donating my kidney, I felt like I needed something to train for—a new challenge to prove to myself that I could still do hard things. That's when I decided to take on the Hyrox competition with my training partner, Tish. Our goal? To truly test our limits and show others that even after a major surgery, you can still push your body further than you ever imagined!

Now, if you're like me, you might be thinking, What exactly is Hyrox? Hyrox is an intense fitness competition that combines running with functional fitness. The event includes eight different workout stations, each designed to test your strength, endurance, and mental toughness. In between these stations, you'll be running 1km to the next challenge. It’s a total body workout that demands everything you’ve got.

As someone who isn’t naturally a long-distance runner (I’m more of a sprinter!), this challenge is completely new for me. I’ve been training for about five months now, and let me tell you—it's been a game changer. There’s a lot of cardio, which was something I used to dread. But with the Hyrox format, I’ve actually started enjoying the running portion! I’m noticing big improvements in my stamina, and now, I even find myself feeling the urge to run—a far cry from my old self who would avoid the treadmill at all costs.

To give you a better idea of what the competition looks like, here’s a breakdown of the stations for women’s doubles:

  1. 1000m Ski Erg
  2. Sled Push 102kg (including Sled) 4x12.5m
  3. Sled Pull 78kg (including Sled) 4x12.5m
  4. 80m Burpee Broad Jump
  5. 1000m Rower
  6. 200m Farmers Carry 16kg x2
  7. 100m Lunges 10kg
  8. 75 Wall Balls with 4kg

Each of these stations is designed to test different aspects of fitness, from strength to endurance. For example, the sled push and pull will challenge your lower body strength, while the ski erg and rower will push your cardiovascular endurance to the max. It’s truly a full-body test, and the excitement of each station keeps me motivated through every single session.

What I love most about training for Hyrox is the way it’s opened my eyes to new possibilities for my fitness journey. I didn’t know if I could handle such a physically demanding competition after donating my kidney, but now, I feel stronger than ever. I’m excited to compete in my first-ever Hyrox event and share this experience with all of you. It’s a reminder that no matter what obstacles we face in life, we can overcome them and push beyond our limits. If I can do this after a kidney donation, imagine what you can achieve by setting your own fitness goals!
